D K Shivakumar Highlights the Long-Term Nature of Bengaluru’s Urban Development

Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has outlined that transforming Bengaluru into a modern, well-planned city is no small task and requires long-term effort. Despite Bengaluru’s status as a global tech hub, the city has struggled with rapid urbanization, leading to overburdened infrastructure and a diminished quality of life for its residents.

In a recent public address, Shivakumar reflected on the difficulties the government faces in trying to bring about swift changes to the city’s infrastructure. With major traffic bottlenecks, water scarcity issues, and deteriorating roads, the city has been battling a public outcry regarding its lack of modernization despite its position as a center for global innovation.

Shivakumar noted that these issues stem from years of unchecked growth, and thus the remedy cannot be quick. He assured the public that the state government is focused on long-term solutions, with projects such as road widening, metro expansions, and new residential and commercial developments already underway. However, these are just a few aspects of a larger, multi-year plan that will take time to execute.

The Deputy CM also emphasized the importance of inclusive planning, with urbanization requiring input from the people, experts, and authorities alike. He recognized that while the transformation of Bengaluru will be a long journey, the government’s focus is on creating an infrastructure that will serve the city’s population for generations.
