In an incident that stood out for its demonstration of discipline and adherence to aviation safety norms, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was delayed at Jalgaon Airport on June 6, 2025, when the pilot of his chartered flight refused to operate beyond his permitted duty hours.
Shinde had just completed his participation in the revered ‘Palkhi Yatra’ of Sant Muktai in Muktainagar—a major spiritual and cultural event in Maharashtra. As he arrived at the airport for his return to Mumbai, the pilot informed authorities that continuing the flight would breach the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)’s Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL), and he could not proceed further.
The FDTL norms are a vital part of aviation safety globally, ensuring pilots are well-rested and alert. Fatigue is a known contributor to in-flight errors and incidents, and aviation experts have repeatedly emphasized that no flight should be operated under conditions that risk the safety of crew or passengers.
Though a VIP passenger was involved, there was no disruption, and no pressure was reportedly placed on the pilot. Eknath Shinde accepted the situation calmly and waited at the terminal for over an hour. A source close to the matter said, “He did not complain or try to override the protocol. He said, ‘If this is the rule, so be it.’”
As the news reached Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, he quickly took charge of the situation and coordinated alternate arrangements to bring Shinde back to Mumbai. While handling the logistics, Fadnavis also came across a kidney patient who required urgent transport for medical treatment in the city. The patient was added to the alternate flight—a humanitarian gesture that drew widespread public admiration.
Social media platforms lit up with praise for the incident. “Refreshing to see politicians respecting rules instead of breaking them,” one user posted on X. Others commended the empathy shown by Fadnavis, saying, “Helping a patient while solving a VIP delay—this is what public service should look like.”
The DGCA, when approached for comment, reiterated the importance of respecting pilot duty limitations, stating, “Flight safety cannot be compromised under any circumstance. Our guidelines are designed to protect everyone onboard.”
The pilot’s decision to ground the flight also received applause from the aviation community. “He did exactly what he was trained to do,” said a senior airline operations manager. “Safety doesn’t care about titles. This is the gold standard of professionalism.”
