Kalamkaval Available in Four Languages Starting January 16
After a successful theatrical run, Mammootty’s psychological crime thriller Kalamkaval is set to premiere on Sony LIV tomorrow, January 16. The film will be available in four languages: Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.
Kalamkaval, directed by debutant Jithin K. Jose and produced under Mammootty Kampany, was released in theatres on December 5, 2025. The film is set apart from typical Malayalam movies. Instead of a fast-paced, action-heavy storyline, the film unfolds slowly and focuses on investigation and tiny details, creating a tense and darker atmosphere than what audiences typically expect.
Kalamkaval Cast
The cast is led by Malayalam star Mammootty as Stanley Das, a psychopathic serial killer. Vinayakan plays the determined investigating officer pursuing the killer. The supporting cast includes Rajisha Vijayan, Shruti Ramachandran, Gibin Gopinath, Gayatri Arun, and Meera Jasmine.
The Story: A Gripping Police Investigation
Set in Kottayikonam, Kalamkaval follows Kerala’s Special Investigation Team as they track a serial killer inspired by real-life events. The narrative unfolds as a tense cat-and-mouse game between Mammootty’s chilling antagonist and Vinayakan’s cop character, with the investigation revealing shocking truths about escalating violence.
Critical Response
Critics are calling it Mammootty’s darkest role to date. Film critics have praised Kalamkaval for its exceptional performances and gripping narrative. They have lauded Mammootty’s performance and described it as his darkest performance till date. Industry observers note that Mammootty delivers one of his most memorable performances, while Vinayakan provides a strong anchor to the investigation storyline. Some reviewers suggested the screenplay could have been tighter, though the consensus remains overwhelmingly positive about the film’s psychological depth and clever twists.
Box Office: Strong Opening Weekend Collections
Kalamkaval recorded impressive box office numbers during its opening weekend. The film collected ₹44.50 crore worldwide in its first three days. Day-wise collections stood at ₹15.65 crore on the opening day, followed by ₹15.45 crore on Day 2 and ₹13.40 crore on Day 3.
In Kerala alone, Kalamkaval dominated with ₹15.50 crore across the opening weekend—₹5 crore, ₹5.10 crore, and ₹5.40 crore on consecutive days. The domestic total reached ₹19.50 crore, with Kerala contributing the lion’s share and the rest of India adding ₹4 crore.
Kalamkaval Achieves Profitability Within Three Weeks
Made on a production budget of ₹29–30 crore, Kalamkaval proved to be a profitable venture for Mammootty Kampany. The film broke even by Day 17, collecting ₹35.75 crore India net and delivering a 32% return on investment.
Trade analysts estimate Kalamkaval’s worldwide gross exceeded ₹80 crore during its 40-day theatrical run, marking it as a commercial success. The film maintained steady collections through weekdays following its strong opening, demonstrating solid audience acceptance.
With its OTT premiere scheduled for tomorrow on Sony LIV, Kalamkaval is expected to reach an even wider audience across multiple languages.
