Bengaluru, often hailed as India’s “Silicon Valley,” has recently faced unprecedented flooding, bringing its bustling tech corridors to a standstill. Heavy rains have exposed critical flaws in the city’s infrastructure, raising urgent questions about urban planning and resilience.
The Deluge
On May 19, 2025, Bengaluru experienced torrential rains that led to widespread flooding across key tech hubs, including Manyata Tech Park, Electronic City, and Whitefield. Roads became impassable, underpasses submerged, and daily commutes turned into hours-long ordeals.
Impact on the Tech Industry
The flooding disrupted operations in numerous IT firms, with employees stranded and unable to reach their workplaces. Companies reported significant losses due to halted operations and decreased productivity. The Outer Ring Road Companies Association (ORRCA) estimated a loss of ₹225 crore on a single day due to traffic gridlocks.
Infrastructure Failures
The city’s drainage system, designed decades ago, failed to cope with the volume of water. Clogged stormwater drains, encroachments on natural water bodies, and rapid urbanization have exacerbated the situation.
Public Outrage
Citizens took to social media to express their frustration. Dilip Kumar, a Zerodha-backed investor, highlighted the irony of a city known for its technological advancements lacking basic infrastructure like an effective drainage system.
Government Response
In response to the crisis, the Karnataka government formed a high-level committee to address the city’s infrastructure issues. Chaired by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, the committee aims to develop both immediate and long-term solutions to prevent future flooding.
