Disney+ series Wonder Man focuses on Hollywood struggles instead of superhero battles

Marvel’s new show Wonder Man arrived on Disney+ on January 27, 2026, and it’s unlike anything the studio has made before. This isn’t about saving the world—it’s about trying to get a job in Hollywood.

What’s It About?

The 8-episode series stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, a struggling actor who can’t catch a break. He teams up with Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley, returning from Iron Man 3) to audition for a Wonder Man movie remake.

After an accident gives Simon phasing powers—the ability to walk through walls—he starts working as a bodyguard. This eventually helps him land a role in a film called Cash Grab, launching his acting career.

Less Action, More Acting

Created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, Wonder Man is part of Marvel’s Spotlight series, which tells smaller, character-focused stories. All episodes released at once on January 27 at 6 PM PT.

The show has very little superhero action. Instead, it focuses on auditions, Hollywood parties, and the difficulty of becoming a successful actor. Simon’s powers are treated as a side issue—his real goal is simply getting cast in movies.

What Critics Say

The Guardian praised the show on January 28 for having “almost no superhero action,” calling it a fresh change from typical Marvel content. The series makes fun of Hollywood’s problems—how random success can be, how hard actors struggle, and how the industry treats people.

Ben Kingsley brings comedy as Trevor Slattery, and his friendship with Simon carries the show. Together, they’re two dreamers chasing an impossible goal.

Is It Good?

Wonder Man is Marvel’s 17th TV show in Phase Six, but it feels completely different. There are no big villains or world-ending threats. Just two guys trying to make it in show business.

If you want traditional superhero action, this show isn’t for you. But if you’re tired of the same formula, Wonder Man offers something new—a Marvel show where the biggest challenge is getting a phone call from your agent.

It’s a risky move for Marvel, but sometimes the smallest stories are the most interesting.
