Gurgaon witnessed another tragic case of reckless driving when a 20-year-old man ran over a local businessman during a late-night hit-and-run. Police identified the victim as 45-year-old Rakesh Malhotra, a resident of DLF Phase-3, who worked as a real estate consultant. The accident occurred near Udyog Vihar Phase-4 around 11:30 pm on Tuesday.
According to investigators, the speeding car struck Malhotra while he crossed the road after parking his vehicle. Eyewitnesses saw the driver accelerate instead of stopping, dragging the victim for several metres before fleeing. Locals rushed Malhotra to a nearby private hospital, but doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
A police team scanned CCTV footage from shops and corporate buildings in the area. The videos showed a white hatchback hitting the victim and swerving dangerously before disappearing toward the highway. Officers traced the vehicle’s registration number and reached the owner’s residence within hours. The owner revealed that his 20-year-old son, Aryan Sharma, had taken the car without permission.
Police detained Aryan from his friend’s flat in Sector 22 early Wednesday morning. During questioning, Aryan admitted that he drove the car at high speed and panicked when he hit the businessman. He also told officers that he never applied for a driving licence. Investigators recovered the damaged vehicle from a parking lot near his friend’s residence.
The victim’s family demanded strict action and accused the authorities of failing to control rising cases of reckless and underage driving in Gurgaon. Malhotra’s brother said the family lost its primary earner and urged the government to strengthen traffic enforcement. Several local residents gathered at the accident site and lit candles in solidarity.
Police registered a case under Sections 279 (rash driving), 304A (causing death by negligence), and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the IPC, along with relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. Officers sent the accused for a medical examination and prepared to present him before a local court.
Gurgaon has reported a steady rise in hit-and-run incidents over the past year. Traffic police announced additional night patrols and surveillance drives to curb violations. Authorities appealed to residents to follow traffic rules and report reckless drivers to prevent similar tragedies.
